“ Should need no introduction. If you were born into the post-war twentieth century and haven’t read this novel then you are missing some vital intelligence. But of course you have read it, haven’t you, and you know it all came true ironically right about the time the magic date came up, when our society finally surrendered to ideological inertia and blithely shrugged off it’s warning. Just as you know that in fact you are sitting before the telescreen right now, and that when they lead you to Room 101 you will have only yourself to blame for the exquisitely tailored fit of their torture.
